I had a friend that did a month long tour (not with Gap) and it went all over China, into the Gobe desert and pretty much to the Kazakhstan border.  Unfourtunatley, I don't know who she it took it with.  I'll try to do some digging.

I found a pretty good site for some info on train travel in China.

The gapadventure travel plans are not extensive enough.  The narrow scope plans are already expensive.

To have them customize one would cost an arm and a leg, thus no going anywhere! hehe

Gap Adventures has some decent trips in China, if you are looking to travel with a group.

Looking for some info on how long to spend backpacking Paris?  I want to see the Effiel Tower, Versailles, Arc De Triumph, and the Louvre.  Can I see it all in two days?

I have heard there are some good group tours that do packages around China.  My wife said Xi'an is pretty cool.

I took the bus from Hong Kong to Nanning and then the train to the Vietnam border.  The train was really cheap from what I remember, but it was extremely bare bones, with wood benches for seats.

The bus was really nice, but I remember it being expensive.

I do not know about cheapest transportation within China as well as best places/ route to spend my time. Does anyone have the experience?

I am looking to bagpack travel through China. I would start from Beijing and then Shanghai... and the rest of China for one to two months.

I then would leave China through Hanoi/ Vietnam and end up in Phnom Penh/ Cambodia where I'll fly back to the US.

I understand that there are buses from Hanoi to Phnom Penh.

Went in May.  Felt pretty safe.  May is supposed to be one of the quiter parties, ie.  only 8-10,000 people.

Would go back if in the area.
